Drill Objective

This soccer passing drill focuses on improving 1-2 combination play. This drill focuses on short and long 1-2's and enhancing movement off the ball.

This soccer passing drill focuses on improving 1-2 combination play. This drill focuses on short and long 1-2's and enhancing movement off the ball.
Drill setup
  1. Set up a grid that is approximately 20 X 25 yards.
  2. Set one player on three of the corner cones (B, C, and D).
  3. The remaining players create a small line on the 4th cone (A).
  4. The player at the beginning of the line starts with the ball.
  5. Start with one ball in the beginning.
Drill Instructions
  1. Player A passes a long ball to Player B and advances towards Player B.
  2. Player B lays the ball off to player A and spin out around his cone and receive the ball from Player A on the other side of the cone.
  3. Player B then plays the ball long to Player C  and advances towards Player C.
  4. Player C lays the ball off to Player B and spins out around his cone and receives the ball from Player B on the other side of the cone. 
  5. Player C then plays the ball long to Player D and advances towards Player D.
  6. Player D lays the ball off to Player C and spins out around his cone and receives the ball from Player C on the other side of the cone.
  7. Player D then plays the ball long to the next Player A and advances towards Player A.
  8. Player A lays the ball off to Player D and sping out around his cone and receives the ball from Player D on the other side of the cone.
  9. The drill repeats.
Drill Variations
  • Run the drill with 2 balls. Start the drill with player A and C at the same time.
  • Change the direction of the play.
Drill Coaching Points
  • Players play in 1 touch with the proper pace and accuracy on each pass.
  • Players should be thinking ahead of the play and be ready to move fast.
  • Players should communicate verbally, by hand motions, or eye contact.
  • Players body positioning is critical for fluid movement.
